07 Dec Getting festive in Gerton
Last year we didn’t get a spray of greenery on the signpost at Fern Cove Lane when the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge community group put up its Christmas decorations. It was the first holiday season since the sign had appeared at our entrance to Hickory Nut Forest in Gerton, so I didn’t take it personally. Lynn Pall and I put up our version of greens on the signpost, holding as close to the décor established by the others as we could. This year I was invited to take part in the annual hanging of greens. It felt great to create beauty and celebrate the community we all share, getting to know the folks who were there as neighbors a bit better. I learned that 5 community members had died in the last week; in fact, there was to be a funeral at the church that afternoon. Jean told me it was good that there were some new faces at the work gathering, saying, “We need you.”
